- Inspired by “Annabel Lee” by Edgar Allan Poe
Annabel Lee is a tone poem for chamber ensemble inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s haunting portrait of love, loss, and devotion beyond death.
Poe’s kingdom by the sea is a place where beauty and grief occupy the same shore. Love survives the beloved’s death, but its persistence leaves an unsettling question: where does enduring devotion become an inability to let go?
This musical interpretation enters that emotional world through piano, violin, violoncello, and pipe organ. Without a sung text, the instruments carry the encounter with Poe’s poem, opening space for the listener to inhabit its tenderness, darkness, and longing.
At the center of the work is the bond between love and memory. The beloved is absent, yet remains everywhere—in dreams, in the surrounding world, and in the life of the one who remembers. The sea becomes both a distance that cannot be crossed and a presence that never leaves.
Annabel Lee invites the listener into that tension: the beauty of a love that endures, and the grief of remaining beside what cannot return.
