A continuous contemporary-classical tone poem arrives September 4

Tristan Robert Lange will release The Shaman, a new contemporary-classical work presented by Appalachian Virtual Ensemble, on Friday, September 4, 2026. It will be available as a free download on Bandcamp and for streaming through most major services.

Written as one uninterrupted composition, The Shaman carries the listener across a psychological and spiritual threshold—through descent, confrontation, altered understanding, and an unresolved return. Rather than offering easy peace or final resolution, the work explores healing as an act of facing what has remained hidden, bearing the truth of what is found, and continuing forward changed.

The composition unfolds without a fixed tonal center or clearly divided movements. Pulse emerges, dissolves, and returns in altered form as repetition gives way to transformation. Its ensemble of flute, bass clarinet, violin, violoncello, contrabass, piano, and percussion creates an immersive soundscape in which ritual presence gradually overtakes ordinary time.

The title invokes the shaman not as an imitation of any specific culture or sacred tradition, but as a universal archetype: one who enters the places others avoid, confronts hidden realities, and returns bearing truth capable of beginning—but not completing—the work of healing.

The Shaman will be released through Appalachian Virtual Ensemble on Bandcamp and participating streaming platforms. The Bandcamp edition also includes a signed version of the cover artwork and a high-resolution 16:9 desktop wallpaper created especially for the release.

The passage begins September 4.

  2. Wow! Sounds interesting! Love the great 19th Century tone poems, and those of Richard Strauss. We don’t see too many contemporary tone poems — or I should say we don’t hear very many contemporary tone poems today.
