Counterpulse Form

An original poetic form by Tristan Robert Lange

A dark, minimalist abstract image showing a glowing lattice of intersecting lines on a black background. Vertical lines glow warm orange, horizontal lines glow cool blue, forming a structured grid at the center. Subtle light points mark intersections. About the form

The Counterpulse Form is a seven-line poem built on two interwoven rhyme movements: a dominant primary pulse and a recurring counterpulse. The form creates tension through repetition, contrast, and return, ending with a final line that delivers a compressed conclusion or verdict.

Structure

The Counterpulse Form contains seven lines total.

Its required rhyme scheme is:

A A B / A A B / A

This creates the following movement:

Primary Pulse / Primary Pulse / Counterpulse
Primary Pulse / Primary Pulse / Counterpulse
Terminal Primary Pulse

Core Rules

  1. The poem must be exactly seven lines.
  2. The rhyme scheme must follow:

A A B / A A B / A

  1. The A lines form the primary pulse. They establish the dominant rhyme, rhythm, and direction of the poem.
  2. The B lines form the counterpulse. Lines 3 and 6 must rhyme with each other and should shift, challenge, interrupt, or reframe the primary pulse.
  3. Line 7 returns to the A rhyme and functions as the terminal line. It should feel like a conclusion, verdict, or distilled statement.
  4. The poem should favor compression over expansion. Each line should carry weight.
  5. The movement of the poem should generally follow:

Establish → Reframe → Reinforce → Reframe → Resolve

Syllabic Guidance

The syllable count is flexible, but the form works best with short, rhythmic lines.

A common range is 5 to 7 syllables per line.

A stricter version may use an inverted syllabic pattern such as:

5 / 7 / 5 / 7 / 5 / 5 / 7

This creates a chant-like or nursery-rhyme cadence while preserving the form’s tension and finality.

Examples

This form was developed for the poem Witch Weaving by Tristan Robert Lange:

  • Witch Weaving

A short, cutting poem that stitches together truth, silence, and survival. Through rhythmic phrasing and stark imagery, Witch Weaving explores what it means to endure under pressure—where voice is controlled, perception is shaped, and sometimes survival depends on what remains unseen.
