Heartichoke Salad

Oct 11, 2026

· Collections, Free Verse, Poem, Scorched Strays

Five angry anthropomorphic artichokes shout and point at two downcast yams in a decorative salad bowl at a church potluck. One holds a sign reading “Secular!” A stained-glass cross appears behind them, and a church is painted on the bowl. Bottom branding includes Tittu, tristanrobertlange.com, and a TRL monogram. — Image: AI-generated using DALL-E and modified by the author; Poetry: written by Tristan Robert Lange, Human-authored.

Another example of Christians
Misjudging another Christian—
Yammering heartichokes never learn.

Give way to others, for Christ’s sake.
Religion is best served in humility.
Anyone witnessing to God’s open love
Needs our support, not our scrutiny.
Take your self-righteous protests to hell.

POET’S NOTE:
An acrostic Scorched Sunday poem. Part of my Scorched Strays collection.

Inspired by the backlash faced by a female Christian artist who dared cross over into mainstream music. This poem confronts the religious self-righteousness that confuses personal expectations with faithfulness, policing the boundaries of Christian identity rather than celebrating the freedom to share one’s gifts beyond them.

Tristan Robert Lange's handwritten signature: Tittu.

Tristan Robert Lange

Hi, I’m Tristan Robert Lange — a poet who writes at the crossroads of existentialism, emotional depth, societal critique, and the gothic. My work often journeys into the human psyche, weaving dark and atmospheric imagery with profound emotional insight. I draw inspiration from literary voices such as Edgar Allan Poe, Jim Morrison, Charles Baudelaire, Sylvia Plath, Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, among others. Their influence fuels my pursuit of vivid imagery and unflinching exploration of the macabre, the mysterious, and the sacred-in-subtext. My poetry is both confessional and visionary, haunted and haloed, carrying the weight of suffering but always straining toward transcendence.
