Remeber the Organizer

Birthed into a quaking faith—
Aflame with the Spirit’s heart—
Yesterday’s speech remembered great,
And its organizer, a personality erased.
Rendered half-okay, therefore half-human;
Disturbing, humanity’s ignorance is.

Remember the organizer—
Unless failure is an aspiration—
Sacrifice is their name.
They come in brown, black, and white,
In queer and straight, trans and gay—
Not to be dismissed—they’re here to stay.

POET’S NOTE:
An acrostic Scorched Sunday poem. Part of my Scorched Strays collection. History has a way of celebrating movements while overlooking the people whose quiet sacrifice made them possible. This poem wrestles with the distance between remembrance and erasure, between the dignity we proclaim and the humanity we withhold. Some names fade. Their work does not.
