Alchemy of Our Asking

A pair of weathered hands holds a broken crown made of stone and barbed wire glowing with embers. Smoke rises against the backdrop of a ruined civic interior with shadowed towers and columns.

God won’t stop this.

Brought upon us by our own evil
Overtures in a civil crucible,
Violence is victory’s vitriol.
Intelligence has become inbred.
Neoauthoritarian necropolis
Overlords were what we desired.

Poet’s Note:
This acrostic was written a week before its publication. Much can change in that time, but a shift in leadership does not equal absolution. This poem asks whether scapegoating a chosen instrument absolves Americans of the collective sin of xenophobia and discrimination.
