“Labyrinth for the Living” by Tristan Robert Lange. A concrete poem arranged visually in a spiral labyrinth shape. The text reads:
We all start off the same way we end: completely in the dark, the void is truly all-consuming. Yet, is it not better to know the truth than to pretend that this illusion will go on forever? Spirituality points us to a different truth. Intellect alone does not teach us all things.
There is a reason our physical minds cannot comprehend true eternity. But yes, even our souls, deep within, inform us that this world, as it is now, is nothing that will last beyond the immediate moment. What lies beyond this is ultimately unknown to anyone, even the faithful.
In fact, friend, this is what faith is, no? Of course, some will misread me here in a couple of possible ways. Some, for instance, mistake me for saying that faith is ultimately meaningless, as it keeps us believing in a delusion. But that is a lazy person’s excuse for not taking the time to think deeper or honestly how they’ve arrived at their own damn conclusions in life.
Truly, faith is as much a friend as surely as ignorance is a foe to all creation. Forget all humanity. Humility teaches us that we all have limited capacity to know, let alone know all things. Thus, faith is an essential part of human life. It is from where our hope springs, where creativity swells, where ingenuity becomes pure genius, despite all those naysayers who said you’re foolish.
