Popeye’s Part

A marble statue of a muscular sailor modeled after Popeye stands proudly before ancient columns. One arm is flexed while the other rests beside a can of spinach on the pedestal. The stone inscription below reads “POPEYEVS GLVG MAXIMVS SOLVS.” The image parodies classical sculpture and heroism with tongue-in-cheek reverence.

There was a sailor strong from the start
As he ate spinach with all his heart.
The more and more he ate,
Bulked him like a primate,
And now he’s missing his private part.
